During a phase change, the temperature of a substance does not change. There is no temperature change as a substance melts, for instance, because the particles have reached their maximum average kinetic energy (basically, speed) as a solid. The particles can not move faster until they have broken out of the solid matrix and have become liquid. What will a plot of temperature vs. added heat look like during this phase change?
